Dehn's big throw leads Badgers at Stanford

Robert Dehn is setting quite the pace for himself early in the outdoor track and field season.
The Wisconsin sophomore recorded his second NCAA regional qualifying mark in as many weeks Friday, leading the way for the Badgers on the opening day of the Stanford Invitational.

Dehn posted a throw of 214 feet, 6 inches in the javelin to improve his qualifying mark for May's NCAA Mideast Regional and finish sixth in a special invitational section of the event.
The mark ranks Dehn second on UW's all-time list in the javelin and matches the third-best mark among Mideast Region competitors so far this season.
Also for the Badgers, freshman Adam Hexum placed 18th in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.16 seconds. Finishing directly behind his Hexum, freshman Adum Gross crossed the finish line in 15.32 seconds.
In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Grant Bughman took 11th place overall. The Whitewater, Wis., native finished fourth in his preliminary heat with a time of 53.98.
Fresh off being honored as Big Ten Men's Track Athlete of the Week, freshman Pat Plank placed 18th by completing the race in 55.02 seconds, while sophomore Billy Lease was 22nd in a time of 56.13.
Also, freshman Brady Hammon finished fifth in the prelims of the 400 meters, which placed him 12th overall in the event. Hammon crossed the finish line in 48.58 seconds.
Competition continues Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field, with a total of five UW athletes taking part in the 200 meters, pole vault and discus.
