
Women's golf award winners announced

The Wisconsin women's golf team announced its year-end award winners at its recent annual banquet. Junior Kelsey Verbeten, who led the team with a 77.94 scoring average this season, was named the team's Player of the Year while classmate Molly Schemm, in her first season at UW after transferring from Northern Iowa, was named Newcomer of the Year.
Verbeten competed in every tournament for the Badgers in 2008-09 and was the team 's top finisher in three events. Her best finish was a tie for third place at the Duramed Collegiate Invitational on March 6-8 in Rio Verde, Ariz. Schemm came on late in the season, leading the Badgers in three of their last four tournaments, including the Big Ten Championships. Schemm's best finish came at the Badger Invitational, where she finished in a tie for fifth place.
Junior Heather Herrick walked away with three awards, earning Most Improved, the Putting award and the Badger Power Award (for excellence in the strength and conditioning program). Junior Beth Weinstein earned the Academic Excellence award for recording the highest GPA during the 2008 spring and fall semesters. Senior Jeana Dahl was presented the Leadership award.
Also at the banquet, the team's three departing seniors, Dahl, Isabel Alvarez and Ann Marie Sztukowski were also honored.
