athid=5177&deptid=142"> --> Gwen Jorgensen 's outstanding senior year at the University of Wisconsin began on the cross country course in the fall and ended at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships just last week.
For the combination of her athletic and academic accomplishments over the course of that year, Jorgensen has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America women's track and cross country team for 2009.
Jorgensen, a graduate student in accounting from Waukesha, Wis., owned an undergraduate grade-point average of 3.73 and has maintained a GPA of 3.90 during graduate studies. One of five Big Ten Conference athletes among the group of 45 honorees, Jorgensen was named to the Academic All-America second team.
While this is Jorgensen's first Academic All-America award, she also earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors both this season and in 2008.
An All-American in the event last season on the track, Jorgensen competed in the 5,000 meters at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships last week after earning a runner-up finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional. She also posted NCAA qualifying marks earlier this season in the 1,500 meters and 10,000 meters.
During the indoor campaign, Jorgensen won Big Ten Conference titles in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters on her way to being named the Great Lakes Region Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA.
She also was the Big Ten runner-up in cross country last fall and led the Badgers to second-place team finishes both at the conference meet and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
In May, Jorgensen earned the seventh Academic All-Big honor of her career, and she is a two-time All-Academic selection by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), in voting by the organization's membership from a pool of candidates comprised of Academic All-District honorees.
Jorgensen was a first-team Academic All-District 5 selection earlier this month, earning the honor for the second-consecutive season.
