Kelsey Verbeten and Beth Weinstein, who will both be seniors next season on the Wisconsin women's golf team, recently won state amateur titles in Wisconsin and Illinois, respectively. Verbeten captured the Wisconsin Women's Match Play Championship, while Weinstein won the Illinois Women's Amateur.
Playing at Eau Claire Country Club in Altoona, Wis., Verbeten defeated Katie Tabbert 4 and 2in the final match. After firing a 73 in the qualifying round, Verbeten bested Tori Ives 6 and 4. To reach the championship match, Verbeten had to get through a current teammate and then a future teammate. In the quarterfinal round, Verbeten topped Molly Schemm, who also recently finished her junior season, 1 up in 19 holes. In the semifinals, Verbeten took down incoming freshman Lindsay Danielson 1 up.
The 76th Illinois Women's Amateur was held at the Kankakee County Club in Kankakee, Ill. Weinstein was tested as the event went on. She won her opening match 6 and 4 over Laura Carlson, took out Mary Ellen Martin 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals and then prevailed against Brooke Beeler 2 and 1 in the semifinals. In the finals, Weinstein faced off against Chelsea Renee Harris.
Weinstein had a three-hole lead through eight holes, but Harris rallied and things were all square going to the 18th hole. Weinstein was able to convert a six-foot par putt on No. 18 to force extra holes. After the 19th and 20th holes failed to determine a winner, Harris was unable to recover after her tee shot on the final hole found a sand trap and Weinstein came away with the win thanks to a par on No. 21.
