Pete Waite can now add the title of author to his impressive resume. Waite, who has coached the Wisconsin volleyball team for the last 10 years, is now a published author. Waite's book, entitled 'Aggressive Volleyball' is currently on sale at Amazon.com.
The 216-page book was published by Human Kinetics in Champaign, Ill., and released earlier this month.
For the Waite, the decision to write a book was not something that came easily.
'Human Kinetics had pursued me a year earlier, but the timing just wasn 't right,' explains Waite. 'The second time they asked, I decided to tackle the project. I knew it would be a lot of work, but I felt that after 30 years of coaching it was time to put something on paper.'
Waite's wrote the book to help coaches of any level improve the play of their team.
'My hope is that I provide some thoughts that can help players and coaches, ' says Waite of his book. 'Having coached clinics, camps, high school, junior college and Division I, there is a wide variety of information I'm providing in the book.
'The overriding theme in the book is balance, both on and off the court. I hope that people who read the book will take some ideas that help them enjoy the sport of volleyball more than ever.'
Waite also asked coaches from some of the top the men's and women's college and club teams to provide tips or stories. These stories appear in each chapter in a section called 'Tips from the Top.'
'I asked them to share some of their most inspirational memories that they have experienced during their careers,' said Waite.
Writing a 200-plus page book was no easy task for the busy head coach.
'I spent a lot of evenings and weekends squeezing in the writing,' said Waite. 'I was able to take a laptop on flights and bit by bit chip away at it. There were a number of revisions with the editors so there were gaps in time when they were reviewing sections and I would wait for them to send it back. The life of a coach is busy enough as it is so this meant a lot of extra late nights.'
Waite hopes that his book will assist coaches and players to become better players and know when to play 'Aggressive Volleyball.'
'The thought process behind it is that winning teams play a style of aggressive volleyball that creates positive situations and points,' explains Waite. 'At the same time, playing too aggressively in certain situations can actually hurt your chances. The bottom line is that Aggressive Volleyball is a mindset that all teams strive for.'
