Volleyball looks to break season trends
September 11, 2009 | Volleyball
So far, the record for the 2009 Wisconsin volleyball team reads loss ' win ' loss ' win ' loss ' win. That's a trend that the Badgers would like to break this weekend at the Notre Dame/adidas Invitational.
'We'd like to put a few back-to-back wins here together,' said UW coach Pete Waite. 'We know these are both good teams. Notre Dame is a team we see on occasion and the last few years it's been in the NCAA tournament. New Mexico State is a team out of our region that we don't see much but we know they 've been a very strong team and have had some great records, so we know they 're going to be a tough team to beat.'
The Badgers (3-3) begin the tournament today against Notre Dame (3-3) at 6 p.m. CT in the Joyce Center on the UND campus. The match airs live in Madison on The Mic 92.1 (WXXM) or can be heard for free on-line code=wis"> --> here . Live video of the match is also available via Notre Dame's code=nd"> --> All-Access . The tournament wraps up on Sunday as Notre Dame and New Mexico State face off at 1 p.m. CT.
UW has only three matches remaining before the Big Ten Conference season opens on Sept. 23 at home vs. Iowa.
'Time's flying ' both in our practices and in our competitions,' said Waite. 'We feel we've come a long way though from the beginning, with having so many new players on our roster. We're feeling more comfortable and the players are feeling more comfortable with each other on the court. '
Feeling more comfortable on the court has been difficult as the Badgers have had five different lineups in six matches.
'We're using our pre-conference schedule to find the right lineup and find the right chemistry on the court,' explains Waite. 'I think last weekend some players stepped up and had a great match against Oregon State. We'll be going with that group for the Notre Dame match but at the same time, we feel like we 're developing some flexibility and depth in the group as well.'
