Women's golf finishes sixth at Cougar Classic
September 14, 2009 | Women's Golf
The Badger women's golf team completed its first tournament of the year with a sixth place finish at the Duramed Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C. UW's 54-hole total of 288-295-295--878 set the school 54-hole record by one stroke over the 2001 school record of 879 set at the Legends Shootout in Franklin, Ind.
The Badgers shot a school 18-hole team record 288 in the opening round, and followed up with two 295s to finish the tournament. It was the first time in school history the team had shot three-consecutive sub-300 rounds.
Georgia won the event with a tournament record 14-under par 850 followed by Florida State (857) and North Carolina (857). Gerogia's Marta Silva Zamora was the medalist with an 8-under par 208.
Wisconsin's Jessie Gerry finished in a tie for seventh with a 2-under-par 214. Gerry's total was a career best and 54-hole school record beating the 215 she set last season as a freshman in winning the Badger Golf Invitational last September. That score was also a tie with Emily Hendricks from the Legends tournament in 2001.
Senior Molly Schemm, who recorded the low round for the Badgers with a 69 in the opener, tied for 32nd along with teammate junior Carly Werwie with 222. Freshman Alyssa Elliott acquitted herself well in her collegiate debut with a 7-over-par 223 to finish tied for 34th. Last year's top returning scorer, senior Kelsey Verbeten, rounded out the scoring tying for 60th with a 230.
The Badgers will be off until they host their own tournament Sunday-Monday, Sept. 27-28 at University Ridge Golf Course. The 15-team Lady Northern Invitational features all 11 Big Ten teams and is a preview of the course for the Big Ten Women's Golf Championship to be held in Madison April 23-25, 2010.
