MADISON, Wis. - The streak is finally over. For the first time this season, the Wisconsin volleyball team won two straight matches. The Badgers swept Green Bay 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 in front of 1,946 fans at the Kress Events Center on Wednesday night.

'"We have a streak,"' said UW coach Pete Waite with a smile. '"We''re glad to put back-to-back wins together and now we' 'll have a week to prepare and rest up for Iowa and Big Ten play."

'"This was a good match for us to come into the Green Bay gym, where they really highlighted this match. They had a great crowd and a lot of the Green Bay players had played high school or club with our team, so they were very familiar with us. After a slightly slow start, we got that first set under our belts and came out stronger and faster in the second set."'

Wisconsin hit a season-high .290 for the match, including a career-best .733 (11-0-15) from senior Caity DuPont. Brittany Dolgner also chipped in 11 kills to lead the UW offense. Elle Ohlander added nine kills as the Badgers put down 46 kills compared to 29 kills for the Phoenix.

After starting out hitting .298 for the first set, Green Bay hit just .123 for the match. The Phoenix were led by Nikki Hintze with eight kills.

Janelle Gabrielsen put up 37 assists and added four kills to the UW offense.

Wisconsin out-blocked a team for just the second time this season, stopping eight shots. Kirby Toon led the UW with a career-high four stuffs, including one solo. Dolgner, Ohlander and Kelsey Maloney all added three blocks. Green Bay stopped seven Badger shots.

UW had an impressive back-row defensive showing, finishing with a 49-36 advantage in digs. Kim Kuzma led all players with 15 digs while Dolgner recorded a double-double, adding a season-high 14 digs.

The Badgers and Phoenix battled through the first set, knotting the score 12 times. A kill from Ohlander broke an 18-18 tie, but Wisconsin didn''t pull away until two ball handling errors by Green Bay gave UW its first set point at 24-20.

The Phoenix held off two set points before a UWGB service error gave the Badgers the first set.

'"They were committing on our middles and we were trying to set the pace with our middle attack, so they got us a couple of times on the block,"' explained Waite. '"Once we settled down and spread the ball out a little more, we found more success that way."'

Wisconsin came out tough in the second set, hitting .361 for the period. UW led 4-3 before going on a 9-2 run, taking a 13-5 lead. Dolgner had two of her five kills in the set to lead the rally. Green Bay cut the lead to four (15-11), but behind the service of Ashley Wiedmeyer, UW scored three straight to go up 18-11 and put the set out of reach.

'"Ashley Wiedmeyer came in for the first time in a match and we trusted her with her serve," ' said Waite. "'She got an ace and a couple of digs. She was really composed out there. We liked seeing that a lot."'

UW battled back from a 15-10 deficit in the third set before DuPont led a 6-1 run to tie the score at 16. DuPont had five kills in the set, including two straight to put the Badgers up 17-16.

Wisconsin wouldn''t relinquish its lead, as two straight Phoenix errors ended the set and gave UW the sweep.

'"That said a lot for our kids' determination and their focus," ' said Waite of the comeback. '"That was one goal we had tonight was to stay focused for the entire match. Even in the third set, we were down 15-10 and came back. Those are good signs for a team to battle like that."'

The Badgers open the 2009 Big Ten Conference season on Sept. 23 when they host Iowa in the UW Field House. First serve is at 7 p.m., and the match will air live on the Big Ten Network.
