Wisconsin will compete against all 11 Big Ten teams in the 15-team tournament, which is held in the fall prior to UW hosting the Big Ten Championship April 23-25, 2010. In addition to the Big Ten teams, College of Charleston, Iowa State, Georgia and SMU round out the field.
Competing this week for the Badgers are Lindsay Danielson (Osceola, Wis.), Alyssa Elliott (Madison, Wis.), Jessie Gerry (Madison, Wis.), Molly Schemm (Ft. Atkinson, Wis.), Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) and Carly Werwie (Kenosha, Wis.).
The Badgers started their season off right with a sixth-place finish at the Duramed Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C. It was a record breaking performance for the UW as it tallied its best 18-hole score (288) and 54-hole score of 288-295-295'878, to break the 2001 record by a single stroke. Not only did the team break records, sophomore Jessie Gerry recorded a score of 214 to surpass her previous 54-hole record of 215, set at the 2008 Badger Invitational.
'We had some very consistent scores, had some very strong wins against traditionally strong golf programs and programs that I expect to be certainly in the national rankings and national consideration in the future throughout the year,' Oehrlein. 'It's a good start, but that's over, and now we 're on the next event. So that's where we're at this moment. '
Steady play from the Badgers at the Cougar Classic has Coach Oehrlein excited for this weekend's competition. Wisconsin enters the weekend ranked 29th nationally and fourth within the tournament behind Ohio State (10th), Michigan State (23rd), and Purdue (27th). The Badgers are excited to continue to develop and improve this weekend and are looking forward to competing on familiar grounds.
'The players are excited,' Oehrlein said. 'They look forward to that opportunity to be here. We have had it on our calender for a few years and knew it was coming up so there is excitement and a lot of anticipation.'
Oehrlein has high hopes for the Wisconsin going into the weekend and hopes the Badgers are benefitted by the opportunity to play at home.
'I would expect to see some solid scores and see some consistency, just the comfort level of being on your home golf course,' he said. 'It sets up for a nice start. We will have to go out and perform though.'
The tournament will begin with 36-holes on Sunday in a shotgun format beginning at 8:30 a.m. Pairings for the final 18 holes on Munday will be determined by scores. Monday 's competition will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The low four individual scores will determine the team score for each round (play six count four.
