MADISON, Wis. -- In his eighth year as a professional hockey player, former Badger defenseman Brian Fahey got his first taste of the NHL this past Saturday, making his debut for the Washington Capitals against the Nashville Predators.
It was a successful debut for the former Badger (1999-2003) as the Capitals claimed a 3-2 overtime victory in Nashville. The Glenview, Ill., native got 9:50 of ice time in 15 shifts, including 1:32 of time on the power play.
A fourth-round draft pick (119th overall) by the Colorado Avalanche in 2000, Fahey collected 14 goals and 53 points in 157 games for the Badgers during his four-year career. A member of the 2000 WCHA All-Rookie Team, the defenseman was the 2002 Badger Hockey Showdown Most Outstanding Player.
He becomes the 17th former Badger this season and the 67th all-time to play in the NHL. He is also the second former Badger to make his NHL debut this season, joining New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan.
Fahey was reassigned to the AHL's Hershey Bears on Sunday.
