MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin wrestling program invites fans to attend a free coaches clinic and the annual Intrasquad Scrimmage on Thursday night.
The night begins with the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Clinic, which takes place at the UW Field House from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Coaches who attend will receive free direction and advice from the Badger wrestling coaching staff, including 2010 NWCA Coach of the Year Barry Davis.
Following the coaches clinic, fans are encouraged to attend the annual Intrasquad Scrimmage at the UW Field House at 7 p.m. Two Badgers in each weight class will take on one another in wrestle-off fashion. Free wrestling team posters and key tags will be available while supplies last.
During the scrimmage, fans will get a sneak peak at several of the Badgers, including the three returning All-Americans from last year’s team that took fourth place at the NCAA championships.
Tyler Graff-133 lbs.
No. 8 seed Tyler Graff put together a 5-2 record to capture fifth place at 133 lbs at the 2010 NCAA Division I Championships. After two straight wins, Graff fell to No. 1 and eventual champion Jayson Ness of Minnesota. Graff came back though and upset No. 7 Mike Grey of Cornell and No. 5 Borislav Novachkov of Cal Poly to reach the consolation semifinals. A loss to No. 3 Franklin Gomez of Michigan State put Graff in the fifth place match, but there he earned a 5-3 decision over No.6 Dan Mitcheff of Kent State.
Andrew Howe-165 lbs.
Andrew Howe defeated Penn State’s Dan Vallimont, 9-3, for the 2010 NCAA title at 165 lbs. With the win, Howe became the 13th different NCAA Champion in school history and the first since current UW Associate Head Coach Donny Pritzlaff won back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001.
The Indiana native finished his sophomore season as an All-American, as well as an NCAA and Big Ten champion. He compiled a 37-0 overall record, including four wins by pin, two by tech fall and 13 by major decision. He is just the fourth Badger to go undefeated in a single season, joining Matt Demaray (42-0 in 1990-91), Andy Rein (40-0 in 1979-80) and Lee Kemp (39-0 in 1975-76).
Trevor Brandvold-197 lbs.
At the NCAA championships, fifth-seeded junior Trevor Brandvold took sixth place at 197 lbs., after going 4-3 at the event. He started strong with a pair of wins, including a pin over Brent Jones of Virginia in the first round. A loss in the third round to No. 4 Cam Simaz of Cornell dropped him to the wrestlebacks, though. A pair of wins over Big Ten foes Chad Beatty of Iowa and Sonny Yohn of Minnesota earned Brandvold All-American honors, but consecutive losses ended his run at sixth place.
Earlier in the season, Brandvold earned his first Big Ten Conference title when he defeated Sonny Yohn of Minnesota.
The lineups are as follows with those representing the red team listed first and those on the white team listed second.
