
Three Badgers place first at UW-Stevens Point Open

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin wrestling team competed in the Pointer open over the weekend. Three Badgers earned first place titles in Saturday’s competition, held in Stevens Point, Wis.
Freshman Matt Cavallaris finished with a perfect 4-0 record, including two wins by major decision, to garner the first place title at 125 lbs. Cavallaris defeated Jordan Ng of Cornell with a 4-1 decision to earn the title. John Mason (Cornell), Carl DeLuca (UW-Oshkosh), and Ethan Loftus (Rochester Community College) also fell to Cavallaris in Saturday’s event.
At 197 lbs., redshirt freshman Derrick Borlie placed first. Borlie defeated Brandon Jochem (UW-Stevens Point), 17-2, to claim the title with a technical fall in 7 minutes. Borlie’s win on Saturday marks the second-straight week that he placed in an open tournament. Last Saturday, Borlie took third at the Loras Open in Dubuque, Iowa.
Fellow redshirt freshman Cole Tobin wrapped up the Badgers’ first place accolades as he took the tournament title at heavyweight. Tobin defeated Cody Endres (Wisconsin-La Crosse), 15-0, in the final match to claim the title by technical fall.
The Badgers open their dual season Friday at UNC-Greensboro in Raleigh, N.C. Wisconsin wraps up the weekend with the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Sunday. North Carolina, UNC-G and University of Tennessee-Chattanooga will compete in Sunday’s event in Chapel Hill, N.C.
