MADISON, Wis. – Shortly after leading the Badgers to their best Big Ten tournament finish since 2003, UW men’s soccer head coach John Trask headed to Carson, Calif., to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team at a development camp.
Trask joins the staff of head coach Mike Matkovich as the U-18 Men’s National Team participates in a week-long development camp at the Home Depot Center. The training camp began Saturday and runs through this weekend.
Trask makes his second appearance with the U-18 Men’s National Team after serving in a similar role last spring when Matkovich, Trask and the rest of the national team staff guided 24 national team camp participants through two daily training sessions, as well as matches against local club teams.
“To be asked to help again with the U-18 national team and work with Coach Matkovich is always a privilege,” Trask said. “When you look at the full national team who just beat South Africa and realize that Gale (Agbossoumonde) was with us in the last cycle of U-18’s, you are having a role in player development at the highest levels of U.S. Soccer and that’s awesome.”
The 36-player roster includes 31 players who are currently part of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The training camp will include friendly games against local men’s teams, including Ventura County Fusion, FC Hasental, Hollywood United and Orange County Blue Star.
Following his stint with the U-18 national team, Trask and his Wisconsin coaching staff will spend time at the 2010 Development Academy Winter Showcase in Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 1-7.
