
Badgers to face Buckeyes in Big Ten Tournament

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin men’s soccer team is slated to face Ohio State in the first round of the 2010 Big Ten Conference Tournament, the Big Ten announced today. The Badgers face the Buckeyes at 11:30 a.m. (CT) in the second opening round game Thursday.
The Big Ten tournament, hosted by Penn State, will feature three opening round games on Thursday, followed by two semifinal games on Friday. The championship game will take place on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT) with the winner earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Indiana earned the top seed in the Big Ten tournament after posting a 4-1-1 conference record to earn its 13th Big Ten title. The Hoosiers have earned a bye in the first round of the tournament.
Wisconsin (4-12-2, 1-4-1 Big Ten) finished seventh in the conference standings and faces No. 2 seed Ohio State (10-5-2, 4-2-0 Big Ten) in the opening round. The Badgers enter the tournament on a two-game winning streak after earning back-to-back 1-0 shutout victories over UIC (Nov. 3) and Penn State (Nov. 6). UW has won three of its last four games, defeating Milwaukee 2-0 (Oct. 27) and dropping a 1-0 decision to the Buckeyes (Oct. 31).
OSU is the league’s defending tournament champion and enters Thursday’s game on a three-game winning streak. The Buckeyes have posted three-straight shutouts, defeating Oakland, 2-0, and Indiana, 1-0, in addition to their 1-0 win over the Badgers.
Konrad Warzycha leads the Buckeyes with 14 points on seven goals. Austin McAnena and Chris Hegngi also have double-figure point totals at 11 points (four goals and three assists) and 10 points (three goals and four assists), respectively. Matt Lampson has played all 17 games in goal for Ohio State and has nine shutouts with a 0.68 goals against average and a .868 save percentage.
In other Big Ten tournament pairings, No. 3 seed Michigan faces No. 6 seed Michigan State at 9 a.m. (CT) Thursday. The final quarterfinal round matchup features No. 4 seed Penn State and No. 5 seed Northwestern.
The top-seeded Hoosiers have a bye in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament and will face the winner of the Penn State-Northwestern match.
Friday’s semifinals will pit the Michigan-Michigan State winner against the Ohio State-Wisconsin winner at 12 p.m. (CT), with Indiana taking on the winner of Penn State-Northwestern at 2:30 p.m. (CT). The semifinal and championship games will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
