MADISON, Wis. – Freshman goalkeeper Max Jentsch (Hartland, Wis.) has been named the Big Ten Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Jentsch led the Badgers to back-to-back shutout victories over UIC and Penn State last week.
Jentsch is the third Badger to take home Big Ten weekly laurels this season. Fellow freshman Chris Prince (Naperville, Ill.) was named Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 25, and senior goalkeeper Ryan Vint (Plymouth, Minn.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors Oct. 4. The award marks the first of Jentsch’s career.
Jentsch made four saves in the Badgers’ 1-0 overtime win against UIC last Wednesday. He followed up with a six-save performance, including a diving stop of a penalty kick, to help UW upset Big Ten foe and then-No. 22 Penn State, 1-0, last Saturday.
The Hartland, Wis., native is now 3-5-0 with three shutouts on the season. Jentsch’s current shutout streak is 248:17, including 62:26 of shutout soccer against Ohio State before he earned complete-game shutouts against UIC (95:51 with overtime) and Penn State (90:00).
Jentsch was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week ending Nov. 7 for his efforts last week.
Jentsch and the Badgers (4-12-2, 1-4-1 Big Ten) take a two-game winning streak into the 2010 Big Ten Tournament hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa., this week. No. 7 seed Wisconsin is slated to face No. 2 seed Ohio State (10-5-2, 4-2-0 Big Ten) at 11:30 a.m. (CT) Thursday.
