Wisocnsin Coach Lisa Stone Quotes
On holding Milwaukee today:
"I give Milwaukee a lot of credit. Sandy's (Botham) got that team playing very well. They have a hefty schedule with Oklahoma, Michigan State, Minnesota, and they hung in there with those 3-point shots. We were quite aware of that. One of their players is not known for her 3-point shooting and (she) was 5-for-7 today.
When you play this game you throw the record books out. It was an early afternoon game, it's snowy out, you can make all kinds of excuses, but I said it's better than staying at home sitting in front of the TV. So we got our kids fired up.
We talked about getting the ball inside in the second half, because we didn't shoot real well from the outside. As hot as they were outside, we were as cold outside on our end. We tried to get the ball inside at the start of the second half. Those first four minutes of the second half we really got the ball inside, played some pretty good defense, and for the most part took care of the ball. We had 16 turnovers, which is pretty good for us, but our goal was under 15.
Again, I can't say enough about Lin Zastrow. She imposed her will in the second half and made her free throws, she was 7-of-7, Tara (Steinbauer) was 7-for-8, so those are some pretty good signs."
On Wisconsin's play in the second half:
"Tara Steinbauer's shot clock kick out to Alyssa Karel, that was a big 3 at that point. They were making a little bit of a run, it was off balance but it went in. That was very heads up on Tara to get that ball out of there.
Our post players are playing well. It's nice to see Tiera (Stephen) on the floor in the first half. She had three assists and only one turnover. She's coming along and that's going to help move Alyssa back to the off guard. We'll see more of her in the future.
On Wisconsin's defense:
"Jade Davis certainly gave us tremendous energy. I thought she did a really great job on (Angela) Rodriguez, who is a really good player. I also thought Tara did a nice job on (Lindsay) Laur. We locked down and we knew who their prime scorers were. Jade gave us great energy.
(Morgan Paige) and Tiera gave us tremendous energy in the first half. We went on a little bit of a run, Mo hits back-to0back 3's. Those are good things to see right now. Hopefully we can build some momentum. We have one game left of our nonconference play and then we have finals week. We have Purdue in here is two weeks. I'm proud of this team. They've hung in there and we're getting back to healthy. We need to stay healthy and really get surging into the Big Ten"
Milwaukee Coach Sandy Botham
Opening Statement:
“We made good runs. I give credit to Wisconsin - their inside game was the difference in the game. Lin Zastrow and Tara Steinbauer, we didn’t have an answer for them."
“We got a lot of growing pains as our program we need to work on and Milwaukee needs to learn how to play more consistent. We had a lot of great runs, we have to sustain our runs and be more disciplined and more consistent on both ends of the court. You saw great things and you saw things we need to work on. Some of that is youth. We got a lot of young kids out there and learning how to play together as a team. Playing Wisconsin and two Big Ten teams in a row, these are the kind of teams that will prepare us for our Horizon league.”
On if the team planned on staying the in the game by making 3-pointers:
“I think that’s how it evolved; we talked about playing an inside-outside game. Trying to get to the paint, whether it is with our post paint touches or attacking, I think we could have done a lot more. The fact that we only got to the free throw line five times, you know that’s been kind of a bread and butter for us. But when you are going up against size, it kind of took us out of our inside game, attacking and penetration because they are bumping us and pushing us away from the basket.”
On Lindsay Laur’s performance:
“I’d have to go back and look, but with Laur sometimes if things aren’t falling early she sometimes is her own worst enemy. She started being a little more aggressive when we were making out runs, and I think she can do more of that.”
“They were bigger, they were stronger, and I think that can kind of have an effect. They were switching and she didn’t get as many looks in the block, so I think it was a combination of a number of things. Not having her presence, she’s been consistent for us, and not having her presence forces other people to step up, and that’s been part of our learning and growing. When she’s not on. somebody else has to step up for us.”
