TEMPE, Ariz. -- True freshman Whitney Massey hit the first home run of her collegiate career on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough as the Wisconsin softball team lost to Cal State Fullerton, 3-1, at the Kajikawa Classic.
The Titans struck first as Trina Harrison led off the top of the second inning with a home run to left field off UW starter Letty Olivarez.
Massey, a native of Salinas, Calif., responded with a solo shot of her own in the bottom of the inning. On an 0-1 count, she turned on the pitch and cleared the fences in right field.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until Cal State Fullerton broke through for two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
With two outs and runners on the corners, pinch hitter Morgan LeMond laced a single to right field to drive in one run. A second Titan run came across later in the frame on a Badger error.
The Badgers were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning following a one-out single by senior Letty Olivarez.
A popout to shortstop by freshman Kendall Grimm and a flyout to centerfield by fellow freshman Maggie Strange closed the door on the potential Badger comeback, though.
Olivarez went the distance for UW in the circle. In seven innings of work, she gave up five hits, three runs and two earned runs. Olivarez also struck out three and walked three.
Wisconsin closes out play at the Kajikawa Classic with a 10 a.m. (CT) tilt against Auburn.
