MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s swimming and diving team stands in 13th place after the opening day of the 2010 NCAA Championships, which kicked off Thursday in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Badgers’ opening day was highlighted by three honorable mention All-America performances by sophomore Beckie Thompson.

Individually, Thompson scored on a 14th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle by finishing in 22.42 after clocking a time of 22.23 in the prelims. She also contributed to Wisconsin’s ninth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 15th-place showing in the 400-yard medley relay.

The Badgers’ quartet of Thompson, junior Maggie Meyer, junior Kelsey Gergen and freshman Ruby Martin grabbed ninth in the 200 free relay by winning the consolation final in the event in a time of 1:29.44. In the morning prelims session, the foursome clocked in at 1:28.97.

Meyer and Thompson then joined with sophomore Ashley Wanland and junior Karlyn Hougan to finish 15th in the 400 medley relay in 3:37.71. Earlier in the day, they clocked in at 3:36.47.

Meyer also swam individually in the 50 free, clocking a time of 22.77 to finish 33rd, while Martin was 57th in 23.30 and Gergen was 59th in 23.59.

With six events in the books on the first day of the championships, the Badgers stand 13th with 23 team points. Stanford leads the standings with 142.5 points, followed by Georgia at 134.

The NCAA championships continue Friday at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center, with prelims set for 10 a.m. and finals to be contested at 6 p.m.
