MADISON, Wis. -- The Badger softball team concluded its weekend series with a 5-1 loss to the Purdue Boilermakers Sunday afternoon at Goodman Diamond.

Purdue got on the board first in the second inning as Molly Garst doubled to center field, allowing Kristen Allen to score after reaching on a fielder’s choice.

The Badgers were able to battle back though in the bottom of the third and tie the game at 1-1.

After reaching base on a fielder’s choice, junior Jennifer Krueger stole second base, tying the Wisconsin single-season record for stolen bases with 19. Then, with two outs, freshman Shannel Blackshear singled through the hole on the left side, allowing Krueger to score.

Purdue added to their score in the fourth. Kristen Allen was able to reach second off an error by Krueger in center field and then get to third off a single by Elizabeth Allum. Garst drove in her second run of the day as she singled up the middle to bring in Allen.

The Boilermakers tallied two more in the top of the fifth. With runners on second and third, Suzie Rzegocki singled to center field, allowing Erika Petruzzi and Ashley Barr to score and giving Purdue a 4-1 lead.

In the sixth, Purdue added another run to bring the margin to 5-1.

Freshman Molly Spence led the Badger offense with a 2-for-2 effort and a walk. Blackshear ended her day 1-for-2 with an RBI single and a walk, while Krueger and senior Katie Soderberg also had hits in the game.

The Badgers are back in action on Tuesday, April 20, when they take on Northern Illinois in a doubleheader at Goodman Diamond. The first game will begin at 3 p.m.
