Badgers move to 11-0 with win over Green Bay

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin volleyball team tied their best start in program history Friday with a 3-0 win over Green Bay. The Badgers defeated the Phoenix 25-9, 25-18, 25-20 to remain undefeated. The impressive 11-0 start hasn't been accomplished since 1996, when the team went on to finish with a 25-8 record.

Wisconsin got off to an early start against Green Bay taking control in the first set. After a tie at 6-6, the Badgers dominated the rest of the set going on a 13-0 run and went on to capture the 25-9 win.
Six Badgers contributed to the 16 total kills in the first set, including Allison Wack and Dominique Thompson, who lead both teams with four kills apiece. Janelle Gabrielsen lead both teams in assists totaling 11 early on in the game.
The second set got off to a good start with a powerful kill by freshman Annemarie Hickey, but Green Bay did not give up that easily. The rest of the set would not come as effortless for the Badgers with four lead changes before either team reached 10 points. The set continued to be well balanced by either team until Wisconsin was able to earn the 25-18 win.
Wack once again led both teams with four kills in the second set. The Badgers totaled 14 kills compared to the Phoenix's 10, and out-blocked Green Bay 5-4. Gabrielsen added 12 assists for the Badgers in the second set as well.
Both teams came out strong in the third set, and the scoring once again stayed close. Despite six tie scores in the third set, the Badgers kept the lead throughout the set as they took the 21-16 lead and went on to sweep their opponent for the eighth time this season.
Freshman Julie Mikaelsen led the attack for the Badgers in the third set, racking up five kills. Five other Badgers added to that count for a total of 18 kills, compared to the Phoenix's 14.
Despite the close scoring, the Badgers controlled the stat lines throughout the game. Wisconsin ended the match with 48 kills and a .316 hitting percentage compared to Green Bay's 28 kills and .128 hitting percentage. The Phoenix hit a negative .081 in the first set.
Wisconsin was able to go to its bench several times in the match, with 13 of the 18 players on the squad seeing action in the win.
Wack ended the match with 11 kills and two service aces to lead both teams. Mikaelsen finished close behind with eight kills and eight other Badgers contributed with kills of their own. Abbey Gitter led the Phoenix in attacks with seven kills on the night.
Gabrielsen finished the night with 23 assists for Wisconsin leading all teams and Jessa Benson added 12 of her own in the third set.
The Badgers edged out the Phoenix in digs 54-47. Green Bay's Brittany Groth led both teams with 15, with the Badger's Kim Kuzma close behind with 11 of her own. Gabrielsen also added 10 to the Badger count.
Wisconsin also led with 7 blocks on the night to Green Bay's 5. Dominique Thompson led both teams with four with six other Badgers contributing to the effort.
The Badgers get some time off before starting off the Big Ten Conference season. Wisconsin plays host to Ohio State Friday, at 7 p.m., and Penn State on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m., at the Field House to kick of Big Ten play.
