Haggerty signs with UW volleyball

MADISON, Wis. - Meghan Haggerty, a 6-3 middle blocker from Glen Ellyn, Ill., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at the University of Wisconsin, head coach Pete Waite announced today.
"We are really pleased that Meg will be joining our program," says Waite. "Meg is a big, strong middle hitter who moves well from side to side along the net. She is powerful on the attack and she puts up a big, solid block. She comes from great club and high school programs, which have prepared her to play at the college level."
Haggerty has aided her Benet Academy team to a spot in the Illinois 4A state championship this weekend. Her team is ranked sixth nationally by ESPN HS. Haggerty was named the most valuable player of the East Suburban Catholic Conference this season and earned a spot on the Chicago Sun-Times All-Area team. Benet Academy, under coach Brad Baker, won four tournaments this season with Haggerty earning two tournament MVP honors and two all-tournament selections.
"Meg is a tireless worker who will do anything for her teammates," says Waite. "I was impressed with Meg the first time I saw her and I knew she'd make a great college player. One of the best things about her is that she continues to improve so I know she'll be a great addition to our team."
Haggerty also plays club volleyball with Sports Performance Volleyball Club (SPVB) under coaches Rick Butler and Troy Gilb. The last two seasons, she has been the starting middle blocker for the 18 Elite team. SPVB won the 2010 AAU 18 Open National Championship and finished second in 2011. Haggerty was named the Best Blocker at the 2011 National Junior Classic, aiding her team to a first-place finish.
Ranked No. 14 on the list of Senior Aces by PrepVolleyball.com, Haggerty is also one of the top-25 seniors in the class of 2012 on ESPN and one of the best senior players by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
