WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Playing in its longest game of the season, the Wisconsin softball team dropped a 4-3 decision in nine innings at Purdue on Sunday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Badgers (28-23, 7-11) held a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth, but the Boilermakers (29-15-2, 7-6-1) rallied to force extras then scored in the ninth to drop UW to 0-4 in extra-inning games this season.

 Fast Facts
• Badgers unable to hold on to 3-0 lead as Purdue rallies
• UW falls to 0-4 this season in extra innings
• Krueger steals 97th base of her career

In the ninth, Tori Chiodo drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a ground out. A line out to left field brought the second out, but Lindsey Rains brought home the winning run on a single that didn't leave the infield.

Rains grounded a shot up the middle as Whitney Massey made a diving stop at second base. Massey tried to throw out Chiodo at home from the seat of her pants, but she wasn't able to get enough on the throw as Chiodo slid in safely.

Cassandra Darrah took the loss and fell to 15-10 on the season. The freshman gave up six hits in 6.1 innings of work with three runs surrendered, though only two were earned. She struck out seven and walked three.

After the game opened with two scoreless innings, the Badgers capitalized on two Purdue miscues to capture a 2-0 lead.

Maggie Strange drew a leadoff walk to start the third inning and Jordan Skinner reached on an infield single. Mary Massei then hit a grounder to Chiodo at third base who bobbled it for an error then compounded the miscue by throwing wildly to first base. Strange came home from second as Skinner ended at third and Massei ended up at second on the throwing error.

With runners on second and third, Jennifer Krueger grounded out but brought home Skinner to tack on another run and put Wisconsin ahead, 2-0.

The Badgers added to their lead in the next inning.

Stephanie Peace led off with a triple to right field, her third of the season. Kendall Grimm then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Peace and extend UW's lead to 3-0.

Purdue answered back in the bottom of the inning by cashing in on a UW error.

Lindsey Rains hit a leadoff single and was safe at second a batter later as Michelle Mueller tried to throw to Jordan Skinner covering second on a fielder's choice but the play was not completed. Erika Petruzzi then singled up the middle to score Purdue's first run.

After a single loaded the bases, Amanda Najdek came on in relief of Darrah. Shelby Krammer hit a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the deficit to one, but Najdek got a foul out and ground out to limit the damage.

The Boilermakers tied the game an inning later on a two-out rally as Rains singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Suzie Rzegocki then drove a single back up the middle to knot the game at 3-3.

Wisconsin closes out the 2011 season this weekend when Ohio State visits Goodman Diamond for a two-game contest. Friday night's game begins at 5 p.m. and airs live on the Big Ten Network, while first pitch on Saturday is set for noon.
