
Women's golf starts season at Cougar Classic

MADISON, Wis. -- Coming off one of the program’s most successful years, the Wisconsin women’s golf team begins the 2011-12 season Sept. 11-12 at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, SC. The three day, 54-hole tournament will feature 22 teams from across the country, including eight teams that finished in the top 25 of the Golf Week/Sagarin Rankings last season.
The Badgers return all but one player form last year's NCAA qualifying team that placed 18th at the NCAA Regional. UW starts the season ranked 48th, and returns to the Cougar Classic where it place ninth last year. However, as a team, Wisconsin turned in the eighth-best 18-hole score (292) and seventh best 54-hole score (897) in program history at the tournament. Junior Lindsay Danielson took the top individual score for the Badgers in Charleston last year with a 220, tying for 17th place overall.
Danielson, who last season turned in the second-best season average in program history (75.21), will lead Wisconsin into the this weekend, along with seniors Ellie Arkin and Jessie Gerry, junior Alyssa Elliot and sophomore Kris Yoo.
The teams will play 18 holes each day at the tournament, located at the par-72, 6,205 yard Yeamans Hall Club. The Badgers tee off Sunday at 11:45 a.m. (CT).
Among the top teams participating this week at the Cougar Classic include Golf Week/Sagarin No. 3 Alabama, LSU (No. 5), Duke (No. 8), Tennessee (No. 10) and defending tournament champion North Carolina (No. 12).
