Madison, Wis. - The only opponent who could top the Wisconsin women's golf team Sunday was mother nature, as the Badgers ended rain-shortened play leading the Badger Invitational by 12 strokes over SMU.
Play was suspended for nearly two hours as thunderstorms passed over University Ridge golf course in Madison. By the time the weather cleared, play resumed for less than an hour as darkness set in and tournament officials were forced to push off the conclusion of round two until Monday. Round three is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. following the conclusion of round two which starts at 8 a.m.
The defending tournament champion Badgers shot their seventh-best 18-hole score in school history to open the invitational, scoring a 4-over 292. SMU trailed Wisconsin after the first round by 12 shots, turning in a 304.
Wisconsin's Lindsay Danielson led all golfers after one round with a 3-under- par 69. Danielson had five birdies and just two bogeys in first round play to lead by two over SMU's Felicia Espericueta.
UW redshirt sophomore Kimberly Dinh was tied for fifth with her 1-over par 73 in her college debut. Jessie Gerry, who won this tournament in 2010, had an eagle on the par 5, 488-yard hole No. 2 chipping in from off the green. She added two more birdies for a 2-over par 74 in the first round to place in a tie for sixth.
Meanwhile, Dana Voss, playing for the Wisconsin B team, shot 3-over for the tournament, landing her in a tie for eighth place overall with a 75.
That Wisconsin B squad sits in a tie for fifth place at 47-over in the 10-team field.
