KINGSTON, R.I. -- The Wisconsin volleyball team found itself in a familiar situation during its match against Rhode Island during the Art Carmichael Invitational Friday night.
The Badgers were up two sets to none against the Rams, just as they were against their tournament host last weekend, NC State.
This time, however, they turned things around after a five-set loss last week.
UW needed four match points in the third set to do it, but the Badgers swept Rhode Island 25-10, 25-21, 30-28.
| Fast Facts | | • Thomas set career-highs in kills, hitting percentage | | • Three Badgers finish with double-digit digs | | • Gabrielsen records double-double (20 a, 10 d) | |
Freshman Courtney Thomas had a stellar day for the Badgers (5-3), setting new career highs in kills (10) and hitting percentage with a .588 (10 - 0 errors - 17 attempts), which led all players.
Senior Janelle Gabrielsen led the Badgers in assists for the second straight game with 20.
Three players finished with double-figure digs for the Badgers, led by sophomore Annemarie Hickey with 15.
Wisconsin kept Rhode Island to a .124 (38 kills - 24 errors - 113 attempts) as a team while finishing with a .292 (44-13-106).
The Badgers outdug the Rams 48-41, and outblocked Rhode Island by a ratio of 4 to 1. Wisconsin had a slight advantage in service aces, finishing with one more than Rhode Island. The Badgers also recorded two fewer service errors than in their match against Boston College earlier in the day.
Wisconsin dominated the first set, starting the match with a 7-0 run and capitalizing on Rhode Island's 11 total errors. The Rams were only able to cut the Badgers' lead to six early in the set at 9-3.
Although the 7-0 run was the longest consecutive string of points for Wisconsin, Rhody only scored three points in a row close to the end of the set, only chipping UW's lead to 20-9 before Wisconsin pulled away.
As a team, the Badgers hit .429 (10-1-21) while the Rams hit -.103 (8-11-29).
Rhode Island started the second set with a run of its own, thanks in part to two straight service aces from freshman Katherine Kolodziej, to make the score 6-2 in its favor. Senior Janelle Gabrielsen then scored two points in a row on a kill and a service ace to cut the Rams' lead in half.
Despite trailing for the first part of the second set, the Badgers only allowed the Rams to lead by as many as three points before a kill from freshman Ellen Chapman gave Wisconsin the lead at 15-14. The Badgers went on to win the second set, 25-21.
Rhode Island came back in the third set, just as NC State did during its match with the Badgers last Friday night.
After trailing 15-9, the Rams put together a 8-0 run to lead 17-15. Gabrielsen and Thomas teamed up for a kill to tie the score for the fifth time in the set at 17. The teams would tie the score six more times during the set.
Despite that, it looked like the Badgers were going to lose another third set to a host school until Thomas and Gabrielsen combined on another kill.
The setters started a 3-0 run that gave the Badgers the set and match points.
Wisconsin looks to finish the Art Carmichael Invitational undefeated with its final match of the tournament against Columbia on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
