MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- A year ago, Wisconsin and Marquette dueled to a 1-1 tie in Madison. Wednesday night’s I-94 re-match in Milwaukee seemed destined for the same outcome until a goal in the 108th minute sent the No. 10 Golden Eagles to a 2-1 victory.
After conceding a goal in the first half, Wisconsin (2-4-3) scored with less than 13 minutes remaining to force extra time in front of a Marquette crowd at Valley Fields. However, the late offensive flurry by the Badgers was deflated after a fluke play gave the Golden Eagles (9-0) an open shot on goal with less than three minutes left in the final overtime period.
With a one-goal deficit entering the second half, the Badgers looked a bit sluggish on the ball with Marquette playing as if another score was imminent. Fortunately, the Badgers’ defense persevered and kept the Golden Eagles from capitalizing on their chances.
With about 20 minutes remaining in regulation, head coach John Trask made a formation change, sending AJ Cochran, who normally plays at the right center-back position, up to the front. With only three defenders on the back line, the Badgers were taking a risk in order to get the goal they desperately needed.
The risk paid off as Toni Ramadani fought to keep possession in the right corner of the Marquette third. Ramadani got free and sent in a cross that found Nick Janus, who got his head on the ball to score his second goal of the season.
With the goal in hand, the Badgers reverted back to their normal defensive posture. Wisconsin continued to carry the momentum after the goal, but was unable to find the back of the net again.
In the first overtime period, neither team had many chances, except for one Golden Eagle shot that skimmed off the cross bar and out of play as time expired.
The second overtime resembled the first, but Marquette caught a break with less than three minutes remaining. A shot from Bryan Ciesiulka was deflected off to the side of the box and found its way to Andy Huftalin who put it in a nearly open net.
Chase Rau made his eighth start in net for the Badgers and recorded a total of four saves in the game, including three in the second half. Lyon made one save in the contest for Marquette.
Sebastian Jansson scored the opening goal of the game for the Golden Eagles in the 37th minute, receiving assists from Ryan Robb and Adam Lysak.
The Badgers return to the pitch this Saturday night when they host Cleveland State at 7 p.m. at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
