MADISON, Wis. -- It did not take long for freshman Rose Lavelle to endear herself to the Badgers faithful.
Two days after stepping off of a plane from a stint with the U20 U.S. Women’s National Team, Lavelle guided UW to a 5-1 thumping of then 14th-ranked Marquette in an exhibition match.
On Monday, it became clear that midway through her freshman campaign, Lavelle is also catching the recognition of the rest of the country.
Top Drawer Soccer recently released its list of the nation’s top-100 freshmen, with Lavelle clocking in at sixth.
Not only does Lavelle’s name stick out among the obvious soccer powers, including West Virginia, Stanford, UCLA and Notre Dame, but she is also the Big Ten’s only freshman ranked in the top-10.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native currently ranks tied for 10th in the conference in goals (6) and is eighth in assists (6). She also leads all Big Ten freshman in that category, while ranking fourth among the conference’s first-year performers in goal scored.
Lavelle burst onto the scene in 2013, scoring UW’s first goal of the season in a 3-2 win at UConn and has continued her strong play into the conference slate, tallying the game-winning goal on Sunday in a crucial, 2-1, win over Iowa.
