MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin men’s golf team teed off its season-closing tournament on Sunday, placing 13th after 18 holes of the 54-hole Wendy’s Kiawah Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C.
UW sits in 13th place with a 17-over par 305 after round one at the tournament hosted by Charleston Southern at the Par 72, 7,100-yard Turtle Point Golf Club.
After winning the tournament last year with a 7-over par 282-293-284—859, South Carolina is competing for a second-straight championship. The only team to finish the first round below par, South Carolina stands atop the 18-team field with a 5-under par 283.
Radford is second with a 3-over par 291, while Presbyterian College, Charleston Southern and Marquee are tied for third place with a 4-over par 292.
Individually, Radford’s Nick Brediger and South Carolina’s Will Starke are leading the field with a 3-under par 69.
Senior Robert Jacobsen recorded the best score for Wisconsin, tallying an even-par 72 to tie for 12th. Senior Jack Watson is tied for 17th place after earning a 1-over par 73.
Also for Wisconsin, freshman Ben Skogen is tied for 69th place with a 7-over par 79. Senior Zach Balit finished the day with a 9-over par 81 and is tied for 83rd, while senior John Gullberg finished with a 10-over par 82 tying for 87th.
Competition continues on Monday, with tee times beginning at 6:55 a.m. (CT). The event concludes on Tuesday with a shot gun start.
