ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Despite a solid 30-save performance by Wisconsin goaltender Landon Peterson, a booming slap shot goal on a second-period power play was all Alaska needed to take the season-opener, 1-0, at the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage, Alaska.

Working the umbrella formation on the power play, Nanooks (1-0-0) defenseman Colton Parayko was fed the puck just above the right face off circle. He wound up and blasted a slapper above Peterson's right shoulder, popping the UW net minder's water bottle in the air and onto the ice.
Alaska earned three power plays on the night, as Joseph LaBate was booked each time.
No. 10/12 Wisconsin (0-1-0) was energized early on, keeping the puck in Alaska's zone for much of the first few shifts.
Alaska finally got its first good opportunity around the 12-minute mark of the first frame with a ringer off the post.
The Badgers failed to convert on their best opportunity of the period, as Ryan Wagner stole a pass at Alaska's blue line and backhanded a shot toward the net.
Wisconsin was never really able to sustain steady pressure due to the Nanooks' ability to control the puck.
Parayko led with a game-high six shots, including numerous scoring chances.
Following his goal four minutes and 55 seconds into the second period, the 6-5 junior carried the puck coast-to-coast, fending off a Wisconsin defenseman with his outstretched arm and forcing Peterson to make a difficult save.
Although many of its players were competing in their very first collegiate hockey game, UW never backed down and fought to the end, nearly tying the contest late in the third period.
A shot from the point ricocheted off the Nanooks' goaltender and onto the stick of Adam Rockwood who stood just feet from the left post and along the goal line. The freshman quickly redirected the rebound at the open net, but the angle was too tight to sneak it in.
In all, eight freshmen saw ice time in the game.
The Badgers were only able to muster 14 shots on goal--less than half of the 31 Alaska peppered Peterson with.
The game marked UW's first ever loss to Alaska, putting the all-time series at 7-1-0 in favor of the Badgers.
Wisconsin is back on the ice Saturday at 10 p.m. to face off with Alaska-Anchorage.
