UW Head Coach Kelly Sheffield
Opening Statement:
"We are excited about the win. We were able to get everybody in. Everybody was able to contribute and happy to see that. I thought Bates was putting up some strong numbers offensively for us. KT Kvass, a kid that hasn’t seen nearly enough playing time this year as she did last year, was coming in and closing the door. We were able to get quite a few points from her serve throughout the evening. We have our rotation of eight or nine people and there is a lot more than that that are working really hard and allowing us to have the season that we are having without getting as much playing time as they would on some other teams. So it is really nice to give them the time. Another kid like Erin Juley, I think her home crowd was able to see what I have been seeing. She is talented and she came in and did a really good job there at the end of game two."

On people progressing as they came in:
That’s a good question. You are going back about a month and a half or so. Not in this conference do you get chances like this. I don’t think it would have taken much to show progression out there when we were giving people the playing time. So yeah, there was some progression out there for us. We were a little bit sloppy there in game two. We also had a lot of people that were in and out and sometimes that can be really tough to find a comfort zone. But yeah, there was progress.
On the blocking in tonight’s match:
"Kelli Bates is doing a little bit better job of listening to her head coach and when she does that good things start happening for her. Kelli is a really stubborn kid. You have heard of those candies that have a thick shell, well that’s Kelli Bates. She has a thick shell. We have had to chip away at that she is starting to listen. When she does that then magical things start happening for her."
On pulling back and putting the starters back in:
"I don’t know. We see these guys everyday at practice. I know what they are capable of doing. To answer your question, a player like Erin Juley who is practicing her rear end off every single day and Julie Mikaelsen, those two deserve to stay in there and go. Some of the cases, like I told our team, it wasn’t just the people that were coming in that were making those errors, it was the people that had been in there that were making some of the errors. Now I’m not going to pull somebody out who is dong a pretty good job when somebody else that has been in there that has kind of been making a couple of those errors. On the other hand, the scores were a little bit closer in two and three but I thought we did a pretty good job tonight."

On what it is like to keep continuity when there is a revolving cast of players around her:
“When new players are coming in and out it’s really important for our team to just be able to play at the same level and be consistent about it. I think we did an OK job of that, I think we need to be better. But that’s one of the things we’ve been working on in practice, is just no matter who’s in, we have to be at the same level every time. As a setter I need to be able to be confident in my hitters and I think the big thing is covering for us. We need to work on that.”
On if distributing the ball to different areas on the court on tips went well tonight:
“Yeah, in the beginning it wasn’t going too well, but I started finding the open spots on the court and found a way to the floor. I’ve been working a lot on it in practice and it’s been paying off.”
On seldom getting the chance to watch a game from the semicircle and how it feels to watch her teammates get out on the floor:
“It feels great for everyone to get out there and show what they do every day in practice. As a setter it’s nice to be able to set everyone on the team, see them have success and have them get excited about it. Because you see them do it every night in practice, but not in front of three thousand, four thousand fans. So it’s just such a good feeling to be able to see that.”
“Any of us that are sitting on the bench, we all kind of keep each other going, keep each other focused on the game. We have cheers for almost every single person, but that’s our way of staying focused and staying engaged in the game. So when my name was called, I was excited. That’s what it felt like. I mean I smiled right away.I ran in, and we practice, we train for that moment. It’s exciting when it comes together and you get a chance to show what you have.”
On how she feels after getting the chance to show what she can do:
“I think I have some things to work on, but again, I’m still pretty excited about it.”
Freshman OH Kelli Bates
On if it comes too easy and if it’s hard to stay pumped throughout the match:
“I wouldn’t say it’s hard to stay pumped throughout a match because our team is consistently doing things that will consistently keep you engaged throughout the game and they’re doing great things all the time. So it’s really not hard to keep paying attention, because eventually you’re going to have your time. So it’s important to pay attention anyways because otherwise you might miss something. You might miss a call, you might miss a play. So I wouldn’t say it’s hard to stay engaged because we’re always doing things that just stand out.”
