UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Joe Naughton scored his first career goal and helped the Wisconsin men's soccer team push No. 12 Penn State into double overtime, but the Badgers ultimately fell in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at Jeffrey Field on Sunday.

After Naughton scored the equalizer late in the first half and helped the Badgers (3-10-2, 0-6-0 Big Ten) tie the game at 1-1, it appeared the team had enough momentum to force at least a draw and pull off an upset to earn its first point of the Big Ten season.

That was not the case, however, as Michael Gonzalez came through for the Nittany Lions and scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute to clinch the victory.

"It was another tough loss," UW head coach John Trask said. "I thought maybe we deserved better out of the game. It was very unfortunate that the (game-winning) goal took a deflection off of Zacc Roelke, because he played a good game in his first start ever."

 Fast Facts
Joe Naughton scores first-career goal at UW.
• UW plays fifth overtime game of season, but loses.
• Badgers fall to 2-6-2 in games decided by one goal or less this season.

Drew Klingenberg got Penn State out in front early, scoring at the 17:00 mark from the top right corner of the box on an assist from Connor Maloney.

An unlikely name helped the Badgers even things back up in the 41st minute, as it was Naughton who took an assist from teammate Mark Segbers and deflected the ball from the middle of the box past PSU goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton for the score.

It marked the first career goal for Naughton, a sophomore midfielder from Brookfield.

The game would remain tied at the end of the second period, which led to UW playing its fifth overtime game of the season.

After each team posted a scoreless 10 minutes in the first overtime period, it wasn't until the 105th minute that Gonzalez ended the game in the second overtime. Firing from 30 yards out, Gonzalez's shot deflected off of redshirt freshman defender Roelke and in for the game-winning score.

UW fell to 0-3-2 in overtime games this season. Three of UW's five overtime games have gone into double overtime.

It was yet another close game for the Badgers, who dropped to 2-6-2 in games decided by one goal or less this season.

Casey Beyers made his sixth start of the season at goalkeeper for Wisconsin, but fell to 1-4-1 on the season despite his four saves.

The Nittany Lions (11-3-1, 5-2-0 Big Ten) outshot the Badgers 16-8 over the course of the game, including six shots on goal. PSU also tallied eight corner kicks to just three from UW.

Wisconsin returns home to Madison for a match against No. 8 Indiana on Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the McClimon Complex.
