MADISON, Wis. -- An explosion of second-period scoring by a balanced Badger offense was the key for the No. 3 Wisconsin women’s hockey team Friday, as the Badgers toppled Minnesota State, 8-0, in the conclusion of this series at LaBahn Arena.
Following an 8-2 victory over the Mavericks Thursday, Friday’s win marks the first time UW has scored more than seven goals twice in a series since defeating Lindenwood 11-0 and 13-0 in September of 2011.

Seven different players scored in the even Wisconsin (11-2-1, 9-2-1-0 WCHA) attack, led by sophomore Sydney McKibbon with two to bring her season total to six. Senior Blayre Turnbull recorded a team-best three points, scoring the first goal of the game and assisting in two other scoring drives.
“I think it’s a huge asset for our team when we’ve got three or four lines that can put the puck in the net,” McKibbon said. “It’s hard to defend for other teams, and it’s something that’s going to play to our advantage going into the rest of the year.”
Wisconsin shone in special teams play, killing all three of Minnesota State’s (0-11-1, 0-9-1-0) power plays and converting two of its six power play opportunities to up its season power-play percentage to .206.
Junior Jorie Walters guarded the net for Wisconsin, making 18 saves to record her second win and shutout of the season. The Badgers outshot MSU 44-18 overall.
After a scoreless first few minutes, a fast-flying puck was knocked down by MSU goaltender Brianna Quade near the Mavericks’ goal line. Turnbull jumped on the loose puck, punching it into the back of the net to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead 7:28 into the first period.
Both teams had two minutes of power play in the first, but neither squad was able to capitalize on the opportunity. With nine seconds left in the period, Minnesota State was called for a checking penalty that sent Wisconsin into the second period with almost two full minutes of a 5-on-4 advantage.
The Badgers outshot the Mavericks 11-7 in the first.
The Badgers made the most of their power play at the start of the second period, beginning with a rocket from junior Courtney Burke at the point that extended UW’s lead to two just 34 seconds into the period.
Just over three minutes later, sophomore Sydney McKibbon got her stick on a pass from senior Katy Josephs in front of MSU’s crease and tipped in UW’s second power-play of the period. The special teams effort brings Wisconsin’s power-play goal count to 13.
But the end of the power play didn’t bring an end to the Badgers’ scoring, as senior Katarina Zgraja juked an MSU defender and sent a hard puck past Quade to tally her first goal of the season with 13:26 left in the second period.
Sophomore Sarah Nurse followed suit, carrying the puck down the left side before flicking it over the goaltender’s shoulder in the heart of the period. Senior Karley Sylvester joined the offensive push just a minute and a half later, firing a shot that deflected off an MSU defender and into the net to create a 6-0 lead for UW.
The Badgers scored once more before the end of the middle period as McKibbon knocked in her second goal of the game at the 17:16 mark to grant Wisconsin a 7-0 advantage heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
MSU goaltender Quade saw an eventful second period as UW outshot MSU 19-6. The Badgers killed two Minnesota State power plays to up their season penalty kill to 94.2 percent.
Wisconsin continued to pressure the MSU defense in the third as freshman Annie Pankowski sent a slapshot from 15 feet out that bounced off Quade and over the line at the 8:14 mark to create the 8-0 lead the Badgers would finish the game with.
Wisconsin outshot MSU 14-5 in the third and was unable to capitalize on any of its three power play opportunities.
“The nice thing about this weekend and the way we played is that everybody got involved and everybody got minutes and everybody got a chance to play,” UW head coach Mark Johnson. “So everybody leaves the rink feeling pretty good about themselves. You can come back Sunday to practice and the players are comfortable and confident. It just makes for a real nice setting.”
The Badgers return to the ice next weekend in a two-game series against St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minnesota, beginning with a 3 p.m. tilt on Friday before concluding with another 3 p.m. game on Saturday.
