MADISON, Wis. – For the 10th time in his career, Wisconsin Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne has earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association regional coach of the year honors. Byrne was honored as the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Men’s Coach of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday.
Byrne has been honored as the Great Lakes men’s coach of the year five times during his seven years in Madison, and was honored five times as the Northeast Region Coach of the Year during his days at Iona.
Under Byrne's watch, the Badgers won their 29th NCAA Great Lakes Regional title last week, as all seven of the Wisconsin runners finished in the top 25. In addition, UW won its 47th Big Ten title and was victorious at the Greater Louisville Classic.
It marks the second time this season Byrne has been honored by his peers, as he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year earlier this month.
Byrne and the Badgers head to Terre Haute, Indiana, for the 2014 NCAA Championship on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course. The women’s 6-kilomter race will begin at 11 a.m. (CT) with the men’s 10-kilomter race to follow at noon.
