Carlini, Bates earn Big Ten weekly honors

MADISON, Wis. – For the fourth time this season, sophomore Lauren Carlini has been named the Big Ten Conference Setter of the Week while Kelli Bates earned her first Freshman of the Week honor, the conference office announced today.
The 6-2 Carlini guided the Badgers to a 3-1 win over No. 10 Illinois and a sweep of No. 20 Ohio State last week. She had five assists and a block as UW rallied from a 23-16 deficit in the third set against the Illini to win 27-25. She had 54 assists against the Illini and picked up her 14th double-double of the season as she added 10 digs. Carlini also added seven kills, two service aces and two blocks vs. Illinois.
At Ohio State, Carlini had 35 assists, seven digs, three blocks, two aces and two kills. On the week, she averaged 12.71 assists, 1.29 kills, 0.57 aces, 2.43 digs and 0.71 blocks per set.
Bates was the Badgers’ top hitter in both matches, recording double figure kills. The 5-11 outside hitter had a career-high 17 kills against Illinois, including five at the end of the third set to key an 11-2 run in a come-from-behind win. She also added four blocks, including one solo, eight digs and two assists against the Illini.
Bates had a match-high 13 kills at Ohio State while adding four blocks, four digs and one ace. On the week, she averaged 4.29 kills, 1.71 digs, and 1.14 blocks per set.
The Badgers (26-2 overall, 17-1 Big Ten) can clinch a share of the Big Ten title with one win this week. UW can win the title outright with two wins. Wisconsin travels to last-place Rutgers (7-24, 0-18) on Wednesday. First serve is at 6 p.m. from College Ave. Gym in New Brunswick, New Jersey. UW wraps up the regular season by hosting No. 19 Purdue (22-8, 12-6) on Friday at 7 p.m. in the UW Field House.
