MADISON, Wis. - Celebrating the 25th anniversary of its national title, the 1990 Wisconsin men's hockey team will be honored during the Badgers game against Minnesota on Saturday.

Members of the team, which won UW's fifth national championship, will be in attendance and recognized on the ice.

The Badgers posted its second-most victories ever in a season at UW, finishing with an overall record of 36-9-1. The team went 19-8-1 against conference opponents, as it won both the WCHA regular-season and playoff titles.

During the NCAA tournament, Wisconsin defeated Maine (twice) and Boston College, before taking down Colgate, 7-3, on April 1, 1990 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit to win the national championship.

John Byce recorded a hat trick in the game, while tournament most valuable player Chris Tancill, current UW assistant coach Gary Shuchuck, Dennis Sneddon and Rob Andriga scored the other goals.

The title was the second under head coach Jeff Sauer and first for UW since 1983.

The Badgers won 18 of their final 20 games in 1989-90, including nine straight to end the season.

Along with earning first-team all-WCHA honors and being awarded WCHA Player of the Year, Shuchuck was named first-team All-American. He set the record for UW seniors with 41 goals and his 80 points are second-most for a Badgers senior.

Goaltender Duane Derksen, defenseman Sean Hill and assistant captain John Byce were second-team all-WCHA.

Wisconsin will play two games against the Gophers this weekend, as the teams face off in the second Border Battle series in three weeks. Fans are encouraged to wear their best Badger white Friday and Saturday to take part in UW's "White Out at the Kohl Center."
