Louisville, Ky. – Despite having a nearly two-week stretch without tournament competition, the Wisconsin women's golf team was as good as its been all year, Monday, at the 54-hole Cardinal Cup, as the Badgers were tied for fifth after 36 holes at the par 72, 6,132-yard University of Louisville Golf Club in Louisville, KY.
Â
UW matched a season-low for 18 holes (295) in the second round and shot just two strokes more than its best score for 36 holes (595), which occurred during the stroke play rounds of the East-West Match Play Challenge.
Â
With a 21-over 302-295--597, Wisconsin is knotted with Louisville (B) (302-295=597) in fifth place. Notably, the Badgers were one shot better than No. 23 East Carolina (+22, 296-302=598) in seventh.
Â
Entering the final round on Tuesday, No. 20 Louisville leads the tournament at an 8-over 287-297=584, No. 47 Florida State (+9, 296-289=585) is in second and No. 32 Notre Dame (+14, 303-287=590) rounds out the top three. Wisconsin sits six strokes back of No. 42 Illinois in fourth.
Â
Much of the Badgers' team success was the product of impressive play by Brooke Ferrell. Ferrell is in first place after a 6-under 66 in Round 1, which tied three other instances (Jessie Gerry, 2008; Isabel Alvarez, 2007; Malinda Johnson, 2002) for the second-lowest 18-hole score in Wisconsin history. The best round ever recorded by a Badger came in 2013 when Kris Yoo shot a 65 at the NCAA Central Regional in Norman, Okla.
Â
Ferrell registered a 2-over 74 in the second round to put her at a 4-under 140 through 36 holes, which was good enough to lead all others. Her two-round score marked a career-best—outdoing her previous record by four strokes—and tied three previous occurrences (Lindsay Danielson, 2012; Alexis Nelson, 2012; Carly Werwie, 2010) for the third-best 36-hole score in school history. Ferrell, along with teammate Gabby Curtis, own UW's top 54-hole scorecard ever at 213, meaning she would have to shoot at least an even 72 in order to beat the record.
Â
The junior leads Isabella DiLisio of Notre Dame in second by two strokes and is three shots ahead of three competitors, who are tied in third.
Â
Michelle Cheung was second for Wisconsin, as she tied for 25th at a 6-over 78-72=150.
Â
Nat Zeng, competing in just her third and fourth rounds of the season, trailed Cheung by one stroke at 7-over (78-73=151).
Â
Curtis (80-76=156) and Becky Klongland (81-77=158) rounded out Wisconsin's team scoring at 12-over and 14-over, respectively. Eight spots separate the pair, as Curtis sits in a tie for 58th and Klongland is knotted in 64th.
Â
Tess Hackworthy competed individually, shooting an 11-over 80-75=155, which put her in 52nd. She was second among the six individual players and trails the leader by nine strokes.
Â
The Cardinal Cup will finish up on Tuesday with third-round tee times beginning at 9:15 a.m.
