Junior tied for first at Cardinal Cup with a 3-under 213, matching the school record for 54 holes
MADISON, Wis. – Thanks to an impressive performance at the Cardinal Cup, Oct. 19-20, Brooke Ferrell was named Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
It marked the first time Ferrell received the recognition. The last Badger to win golfer of the week was Gabby Curtis when she did it in February of last year. Wisconsin women's golfers have now won Big Ten Golfer of the Week 13 times.
Ferrell (66-74-73=213) tied for first at the Cardinal Cup in Louisville, Kentucky, shooting a 3-under 213 which tied six other school marks—one of which was recorded by Ferrell in 2014—for the best 54-hole scorecard in school history. It was the first time a Badger won an event since Kimberly Dinh took the crown at the BYU Entrada Classic in 2013.
The Edgerton, Wisconsin, native gathered new career-highs for 18 (66) and 36 (140) holes and leads the team with a scoring average of 74.09 strokes per round. Ferrell's 18- and 36-hole outputs tied the second- and third-best scores, respectively, in UW history.
After a slow start to the season where she finished tied for 70th at the Cougar Classic, Sept. 13-15, Ferrell improved in each of the three tournaments that followed. She placed 37th through the stroke play rounds at the East-West Match Play Challenge, Sept. 20-22, in Madison and tied for 28th at the Windy City Collegiate Championship, Oct. 5-6, in Wilmette, Illinois, before taking the crown at the Cardinal Cup.
Ferrell, from Edgerton, Wisconsin, led the Badgers as a sophomore shooting the best all-time season average with 74.72 strokes per round. She was named All-Big Ten second team, UW's first since Kris Yoo in 2013. She led the team in five tournaments including the NCAA Regionals where she tied for 20th with an 11-over 224. Ferrell also holds the school freshman scoring record of 75.34 among other school marks.
Over the summer, Ferrell won the Brown Deer Women's Amateur with an even par 72-72--144 and finished tied for second in the Phil Kosin Illinois Open with a 3-under 213, tying her 54-hole personal best.
Wisconsin returns to the links, Oct. 25-26, at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
