Varsity eight takes 10th, top four takes 11th on Lake Carnegie
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The fall season came to a close for the Badger men's rowers as the Badgers traveled to Princeton, New Jersey, for the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie.
UW entered seven boats into two events -- four varsity four boats and three varsity eight boats.
Up first was the varsity eight boats. The varsity eight (A) boat lead the way by placing 10th place out of 54 with a time of 13:24.946. Varsity eight (B) and varsity eight (C) followed with times of 13:48.923 and 13:51.134 for 20th and 21st, respectively. Princeton won the race in 12:57.251.
"While we weren't as close to the leaders as we wanted to be, it was a better overall performance than last year," said head coach Chris Clark. "One thing was clear, it was our first race and we lacked a little sharpness and polish in comparison to the competition."
The varsity four boats followed by placing all four boats in the top 16 in an event that consisted of 33 boats. The varsity four (A) lead the way by taking eleventh place with time of 15:33.625. Varsity four (C) followed by placing 14th with a time of 15:41.334. Varsity four (D) and varsity four (B) followed by placing 15th and 16th with times of 15:41.334 and 15:41.819, respectively. Boston University's top entry captured the event in 14:57.600.
"We put out even boats in the fours so that showed up in the results," Clark added. "I'll take four in the top sixteen for now."
The fall season involves lots of learning on an annual basis, but maybe more so this year with the relative youth of the team.
"Probably the most important factor in the results was the inexperience factor: 12 of the 24 rowers are sophomores," Clark said. "While that can hurt in the short term, we expect big things from them over the next couple of years."
