Big Ten Freshman of the Year among most experienced Canadians
MADISON, Wis. – Freshman Victoria Pickett of the Wisconsin women's soccer team was named to Canada's roster for the 2015 CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship, which was announced by Team Canada and head coach Daniel Worthington last week.
One of 20 players selected to the roster, Pickett is among the most experienced Canadians that will participate in the eight-team CONCACAF finals Dec. 3-13 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The CONCACAF Championship is a key event on the road to the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Papua New Guinea, as the top three nations at the CONCACAF Championship qualify.
Following a brief camp in Sunrise, Florida, the team will head to San Pedro Sula on Monday to begin the CONCACAF tournament with three group matches spanning over five days. Canada has scheduled matches against Trinidad and Tobago on Dec. 3, Jamaica on Dec. 5 and Honduras on Dec. 7.
From two four-nation groups, the top four will advance to the knock out face, with the semifinals on Dec. 11 and the championship and third-place matches on Dec. 13. The top-three nations from the CONCACAF Championship will qualify for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Papua New Guinea.
Pickett is among the most experienced Canadian players, as the Barrie, Ontario, native has spent more than 1,700 days in the Canadian national youth program. This past summer, Pickett played with Wisconsin teammate and fellow Canadian Kinley McNicoll at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. Both Pickett and McNicoll also represented host Canada at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Pickett was 15 years old when she made her debut in the Canadian national youth program in 2012.
The midfielder made an immediate impact for the Badgers this season, as she was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the conference, was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team and was a Second-Team All-Big Ten honoree. Pickett started all 16 matches she played in, notching eight points on two goals and four assists in her debut season as a Badger.
