MADISON, Wis. – After four weeks off from competition, the Wisconsin swimming and diving program returns to the pool and continues its 2015-16 slate. The Badgers will compete first on Friday at Indiana in a 1 p.m. (CT) dual meet, and will then head to Northwestern on Saturday for a 10:30 a.m. showdown with the Wildcats.
The last time out for the Badgers resulted in historical home-opening wins against Minnesota for both the men's and women's squads. The No. 13 men's team came out on top, 159-141, while the No. 18 women's team edged the reigning Big Ten Champion Gophers, 152-148.
Breakout performances were evident all around, as junior Chase Kinney assumed her role as the newly appointed UW lead sprinter by winning four events at the dual meet. Freshman Jess Unicomb made an impressive debut as well, as she swept both of the backstroke events. Â
On the men's side, a trio of Badgers had stellar performances, as
Matt Hutchins,
Brett Pinfold, and
Harrison Tran won two events apiece for UW.
Looking forward, the Badgers continue their season this weekend after four weeks away from the starting blocks.
Beginning first on Friday afternoon in Bloomington, Indiana, the Badgers take on the Hoosiers at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The No. 9 Indiana men's team is 3-6 so far this year, having won dual meets against Cincinnati, Kentucky and No. 11 Tennessee. The No. 9 Hoosier women's team is 4-5 this season, as they've surpassed Cincinnati, No. 11 Florida, and Kentucky.
Both the men's and women's teams fell to Indiana last year, as they hosted the Hoosiers at the UW Natatorium in a tri-dual with Notre Dame.
Following the Friday night dual, Wisconsin will head to Evanston, Illinois, for a late Saturday morning matchup against the Wildcats of Northwestern at Norris Aquatic Center.
The Wildcat men are 3-4 this year, as they topped University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago and Denison at a four-team event hosted by the University of Chicago. The Northwestern women's team has an unbeaten 4-0 record this year, as they topped University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Denison at the same 4-team event, while beating Illinois a week later.
The Wisconsin swimming and diving programs swept Northwestern in last year's meeting, as the Badgers claimed 13 of the men's events and 10 of the women's events to end up on top.
