Wisconsin standout on shortlist of 15 best players in women's college soccer
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin women's soccer junior Rose Lavelle has been selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy for her standout play this season while leading the Badgers to a Big Ten regular season championship, as announced by the NSCAA on Tuesday.
Lavelle is just the second MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist in school history, joining only Heather Taggart, who was a finalist for both the Hermann Trophy and MAC Player of the Year in 1991 – separate honors at the time.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is collegiate soccer's most prestigious award, presented annually to one male and one female athlete. Six finalists (three men, three women) will be named on Friday, Dec. 11 during the 2015 NCAA Men's College Cup in Cary, North Carolina. The winners will be announced on Friday, Jan. 8, at the trophy presentation banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Lavelle emerged as a key leader for Wisconsin in her junior campaign, tallying a team-leading 17 points on seven goals and three assists. The midfielder from Cincinnati, Ohio, earned first-team All-Big Ten accolades for the third-straight season and became the first player in program history to be named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year.
In addition to guiding the Badgers to their first Big Ten regular season crown since 1994, Lavelle was a part of the team winning a program-record 19 games last season, claiming the Big Ten tournament championship and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Having played in 62 games thus far in her collegiate career at Wisconsin, Lavelle has tallied 52 points on 16 goals and 20 assists.
Lavelle is set to train and participate with the full U.S. Women's National Team for the last four matches of its Victory Tour this December. A nominee for the 2014 U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year award, Lavelle has become an up-and-coming name in the U.S. Soccer youth national system and played key roles with both the U.S. Under-23 and Under-20 teams.
Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins has coached one MAC Hermann Trophy winner and had an athlete finish runner-up on four other occasions. While at Penn State, Wilkins helped Christie Welsh become the first player in PSU program history to win the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2001. Welsh finished runner-up in 2002. Also led by Wilkins, Tiffany Weimer was runner-up twice (2004-05) and Joanna Lohman once (2003) for the prestigious award.
Soccer fans can let their collective voice be heard and vote for their favorite player on the MAC Hermann Trophy website or by selecting Lavelle in the embedded poll below.
