Cyclones will face winner of Wisconsin/Oregon
MADISON, Wis. -- Iowa State swept Miami 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Volleyball Tournament on Friday evening in the UW Field House.
Â
Iowa State (19-10) will face the winner of the first-round match between No. 6 Wisconsin and Oregon tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the UW Field House.
Â
Following the loss, Miami finished the season with a 21-10 overall record.
Â
The Iowa State Cyclones hit .289 (45 kills - 12 errors - 114 total attempts) and held the Canes to .225 (40-15-111).
Â
Both sides battled to start. After a 4-0 Cane run tied it at 12, Iowa State responded with a 4-0 run of its own fueled by two kills from Jess Schaben. Despite key kills by Kelsie Groot to keep the Canes within reach, Iowa State capitalized on Miami errors to maintain the lead. To close the set, Schaben's sixth swing of the set brought set point and an ace from Branen Berta put the Cyclones up 1-0.
Â
The Cyclones maintained their momentum to start the second set, but Miami grabbed the lead at 9-8 following a Groot kill. After two more tied scores, a kill by Sakile Simmons sparked a 4-0 Miami run to give the Canes their first significant lead of the match.
Â
Iowa State refused to back down, however, and a service ace by Monique Harris tied it at 17-17. Both teams traded kills to make it 21-21, but a kill by Alexis Conaway and ace from Morgan Kuhrt put the Cyclones up 23-21. An Iowa State service error curbed the Cyclone momentum and two straight swings by Haak quickly put the Canes up 24-23. After a Schaben swing kept the Cyclones alive, Ciara Capezio added two more kills to give the Cyclones a two-set advantage.
Â
After a pivotal comeback to close the second set, the Cyclones rode their momentum into the third set. Iowa State led to start, but the Canes clawed their way back to take an 11-10 lead thanks to a 5-1 run. The Cyclones responded with a 7-1 run that overwhelmed Miami's defense to bring the score to 17-12. Although Alexis Mourning snapped the streak by firing off a kill, Miami's attack struggled to find a rhythm due to tough serving by ISU as the end of the set loomed. Led by Schaben and Alexis Conoway, the fired up Iowa State attack couldn't be slowed. A service ace by Monique Harris brought match point, but Mourning and Groot kept their season alive by firing off a kill apiece. Completing the sweep was Samara West, who put down one final kill to send the Cyclones to the second round.
Â
Schaben recorded a match-high 16 kills while Conaway added nine putaways. Haak led Miami with 11 kills while Groot added 10.
Â
On defense, Iowa State outblocked Miami 7-6 but the Canes had a 51-48 advantage in digs. Caitlin Nolan of Iowa State led all players with 17 digs and a total of eight players tallied two blocks.Â
