Lavelle named to U.S. Soccer training camp roster
December 31, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Wisconsin junior midfielder will take part in January camp
Lavelle was one of 26 players tabbed by head coach Jill Ellis for the camp, which will take place at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, California, and run Jan. 5 through Jan. 21. Not only will Lavelle have the opportunity to train with the nation's best talent, she'll also have a chance to earn a spot on the 18-player roster for the USA's first match of the year against Ireland on Jan. 23 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The match will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1 at 4 p.m. (CT).
Following the match against Ireland, Ellis will name the roster for Olympic Qualifying.
Lavelle is one of 24 players who were with the USA during the final stretch of its Women's World Cup Victory Tour this December. Ellis added goalkeeper Adrianna French and forward Mallory Pugh to round out the 26-player training camp roster. One of the top players for the USA at the 2014 Under-20 Women's World Cup, Lavelle has become an up-and-coming name in the U.S. program. The 20-year-old midfielder led the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team to a title at the 2015 Four Nations Tournament in Norway. She was a finalist for the 2014 U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year.
The 2015 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year had a breakout season offensively for Wisconsin this year, recording a team-leading 17 points on seven goals and three assists. The first Badger to be named a first-team All-American since 1991, Lavelle was also a semifinalist for the 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy, which recognizes the top individual player in college soccer. Lavelle was a second-team All-American in 2014 as a sophomore and was Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2013.
