Junior becomes first Badger to earn first-team recognition since 1991
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin women's soccer junior midfielder Rose Lavelle was announced as a first-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Friday.
Lavelle becomes the first Badger to be named a first-team All-American since 1991, when both Heather Taggart and Karen Maijala earned the distinction. Lavelle is just the fourth player in program history to earn first-team All-America plaudits.
This marks the second-straight season Lavelle has earned All-America distinction, as she was dubbed a second-team All-American by the NSCAA last season.
Earlier this week, the NSCAA also named Lavelle to its list of 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, collegiate soccer's most prestigious individual award. Lavelle joined Taggart as the only players in school history to be named MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalists. Taggart went on to become a finalist.
It was a banner year for both Lavelle and the Wisconsin women's soccer program. Helping the Badgers clinch a share of their first Big Ten regular season championship since 1994, Lavelle became the first Badger in program history to be named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and also earned first-team All-Great Lakes Region accolades from the NSCAA.
Lavelle emerged as a key leader for Wisconsin in her junior campaign, tallying a team-leading 17 points on a team-high seven goals and three assists. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native earned first-team All-Big Ten selection for the third-straight year and was the only unanimous selection in 2015.
Having played in 62 games thus far in her collegiate career at Wisconsin, Lavelle has tallied 52 points on 16 goals and 20 assists.
Lavelle recently received her first call-up to the full U.S. Women's National Team and will be training and participating with the reigning Women's World Cup champions this December for the last four matches of their Victory Tour. A nominee for the 2014 U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year award, Lavelle has become an up-and-coming name in the U.S. Soccer youth national system and played key roles with both the U.S. Under-23 and Under-20 teams.
