MADISON, Wis. - Sophomore defenseman Jack Dougherty (Cottage Grove, Minnesota) has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the NHL's Nashville Predators.
Dougherty, the 51st overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NHL draft by the Predators, had two goals and nine points in 33 games as a freshman last season. He gives up his final three years of eligibility by signing a professional contract.
The 6-2, 190-pound rear guard came to the Badgers from the U.S. National Team Development Program, scoring seven goals and 21 points in 65 games. His time there included the go-ahead goal in the championship game of the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation U18 World Championship against Czech Republic.
He also took part in the 2013 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game and helped Team USA take second at the 2013 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Czech Republic.
In high school, Dougherty helped St. Thomas Academy to a pair of Minnesota state titles.
Dougherty is expected to play next season with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks.
