MADISON, Wis. -- The State of Wisconsin has had the attention of the world when it hosted the PGA Championship Aug. 10-16 at Whistling Straits in Haven. Now the attention of Wisconsin golfers will shift to University Ridge Golf Course where it hosts its first Wisconsin State Open, Aug. 17-19.
The 95th annual Wisconsin State Open features a field of 156 golfers teeing off Monday. Present in the field are 74 professionals led by 2014 champion and PGA Championship participant, Ryan Helminen, of Menasha. At the PGA Championship Helminen shot 77-72--148 (tying Tiger Woods) but did not make the weekend cut.
Also competing are 84 amateurs, including current Badgers Ben Skogen and Eddie Wajda and recent graduate Robbie Jacobsen.
The Open has been held every year but two (during WWII) since 1919. Past champions include current PGA pros Jerry Kelly, Steve Stricker and Mark Wilson.
