Box Score MADISON, Wis. -- There's a Rose in bloom this soccer season in Madison.
Rose Lavelle continued her strong start to 2015 and helped the No. 14 Wisconsin women's soccer team pull out its second-straight overtime victory, this time topping North Dakota State in a 2-1 final at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Scoring her second goal of the season, Lavelle delivered the game-winner for the Badgers (2-0-0) in the 100th minute with just 19 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
"Emily (Borgmann) got the ball into the middle of the field and played a really great slot ball to me. I saw a shot, just went for it and hoped it went in," Lavelle said of her game-winning play.
The 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy candidate scored three goals all of last season, but already has two this year in back-to-back games.
"Rose is coming into her own right now with what she's doing," UW head coach Paula Wilkins said. "It's hard playing two games back-to-back where we had to stretch ourselves a little bit. We created opportunities and gave ourselves chances to maybe put the game away a little bit earlier."
McKenna Meuer helped ensure that one opportunity in the first half did not go to waste, as she scored in the 24th minute to get the Badgers on the board first. The senior midfielder from Madison scored high from 15 yards out off a service from Nikki Greenhalgh.
Meuer scored a goal for the second-straight game Sunday, as she delivered the game-winner on Friday for UW in a double overtime win against Western Michigan.
"We've put McKenna in a different role this season because we thought she would be able to score. So far that's proven to be true," Wilkins said. "She literally has the heart of a Badger. If you watch her work up and down the field, it's very good."
The Badgers finished the first half outshooting the Bison (2-0-0) by a 10-3 margin.
NDSU later found momentum in the second half, however. Lauren Miller helped the Bison tie the game late in the 82nd minute, as she was able to finish back post after a great sequence of passes from Roxy Roemer and Britney Monteon.
Wisconsin and North Dakota State would head into overtime, but it was Lavelle who came through and won the game for UW with just seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
UW outshot NDSU, 24-13. Eight different Badgers recorded shots in the game, led by a game-high five shots from Micaela Powers. Lavelle had four shots, all of which were shots on goal.
"After these two games, getting the players some rest before we head to the west coast is going to be important," Wilkins said of the team's looming road trip. "I need to look and go back and find ways to get some of our younger players some more experience and more time, too. I think that's something that's going to be really important to me."
All hands will need to be on deck next weekend when the Badgers take to the road for the first time this season for a pair of tough tests. No. 14 Wisconsin will face No. 10 Pepperdine on Aug. 28 for a 5 p.m. CT game and No. 4 UCLA on Aug. 30 for a 6 p.m. contest.
