
Badgers place 17th at Cougar Classic to open season

Charleston, S.C. -- After a second round on Monday in which the Wisconsin women's golf team declined three spots from 15th to 18th, the Badgers responded on the final day of the Cougar Classic moving up to finish 17th overall. The team shot a 21-over 309 on Day 3 to bring its tournament score to a 63-over 303-315-309=927.
No. 8-ranked Arkansas remained steady in the top spot, shooting a 4-over 292, as the Razorbacks finished with a 7-under 282-283-292=857.
Georgia jumped No. 16 Virginia on the third day of competition to finish in second place at an even 290-287-287=864.
The Cavaliers, No. 22 Florida and Clemson rounded out the top 5.
Indiana made the biggest jump from Day 2 to Day 3, moving up four spots to finish eighth. The Hoosiers were the highest Big Ten finisher, followed by Michigan tied for 12th, Penn State tied for 14th, the Badgers in 17th and Maryland in 19th.
Curtis (70-80-74=224) led the way for UW, scoring a 2-over 74 on Tuesday, which gave her a tied for 35th finish. She came in at 8-over for the tournament.
Brooke Ferrell (77-76-78=231) and Michelle Cheung (75-79-77=231) placed second among the Badgers, as they both finished at 15-over. The juniors placed tied for 70th.
Rounding out Wisconsin's scoring was Ali Nageotte (81-80-80=241) and Becky Klongland (82-80-84=246). On Tuesday, Nageotte shot an 8-over 80 to finish tied for 98th, while Klongland put up a 12-over 84, which placed 104th.
Next up for the Badgers is the East West Match Play, Sept. 20-22, at University Ridge.
