UW men ranked No. 4, women check in at No. 11
MADISON, Wis. -- After top-10 finishes at last year's NCAA meet, the Wisconsin men's cross country team is ranked No. 4 in this year's U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason National Coaches' Poll, while the women check in at No. 11.
The USTFCCCA Regional Team Rankings were released just a day earlier as the Wisconsin men are the top-ranked squad in the Great Lakes region and the women are ranked second.
Led by 2014 USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Men's Coach of the Year Mick Byrne, the Badger men hope to complete an even more impressive season in 2015. Under the wing of two-time Big Ten champion Malachy Schrobilgen, the Badgers lost only one scorer from last year's Big Ten champion squad and look to continue their impressive streak of 19-straight top-10 finishes at the NCAA championship.
For the women, junior Sarah Disanza leads the team as she placed second at both the NCAA cross country championship and Big Ten championship in 2014. Redshirt freshman Shaelyn Sorensen follows in her stead after representing the U.S. at the 2015 IAAF Junior Cross Country Championship.
Wisconsin opens the season on Friday with the Badger Season Opener at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. The women's 4-kilometer race starts at 5 p.m., while the men's 6-kilometer race begins at 5:30 p.m.
