NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Badgers men's golf team had their best team score of the tournament with a 4-over 288, Tuesday, to finish ninth at Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic held at the Warren Golf Course. Over the two-day event, Wisconsin (295-291-288) compiled a 54-hole score of 22-over 874.
UW moved up one place on the final day after finishing the 36-hole first day in 10th. The Badgers were just one stroke from Xavier in eighth and two strokes from William & Mary in seventh, while they scored two shots better than Ball State and Eastern Michigan, who were tied for 10th.
"Today was very solid for us. We put ourselves in a bad spot after Round 1, but they (the team) played solid in the last two rounds. Ben (Skogen) played so well and there isn't anyone who deserves success more then Ben. We are so happy for him."
St. Mary's (CA) (285-285-280=850) and host Notre Dame (288-281-281=850) knotted for the top spot, as the teams finished 2-under. The Gaels are now a two-time tournament champion after sharing the title with Houston in 2011, while ND also earned its second Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic championship, as it took the crown in 2009.
Wofford (+7, 288-283-288=859), Utah State (+9, 292-284-285=861) and Loyola - Maryland (+15, 287-289-291=867) rounded out the top five.
Skogen continued his success from Day 1 by shooting a 1-under 70 on Tuesday. He finished at a 3-under 71-69-70=210, which put him in a tie for second. He was just three shots off the leader, Jonathan De Los Reye of St. Mary's (CA), who stroked the second-lowest 54-hole total in tournament history.
Skogen's 54-hole score of 210 was the lowest of his career, as he smashed his previous mark of 223 set last year at the Wolverine Intercollegiate when he tied for 47th. The junior's second-place finish was also a new career-best.
Johnny Decker finished at a 7-over 75-73-72=220, followed close behind by Eddie Wajda III at 8-over 73-73-75=221. Decker tied for 30th and Wajda was tied for 33rd.
Newcomer Jordan Hahn (76-76-73=225) shot a 2-over 73 on Day 2, making him 12-over for the tournament. He finished in a tie for 45th.
Michael Abrahamson completed Wisconsin's individual team scoring, as the sophomore ended at an 18-over 78-80-73=231 to place 60th.
Brett Robinson (72-71-78=221) was the top overall individual competitor as he went 8-over for the tournament, which put him in a tie for 33rd, along with Wajda.
Wisconsin returns home to compete in the Badger Invitational, Sept. 27-29, at University Ridge.
